Alfonso dijo...: Es sumamente lamentable que muriese Cohen, de hecho estos días he estado leyendo una obra en donde se analiza los trabajos de Cohen, entre los críticos estan Pogge y Otsuka, mismo que salió editado a finales de julio pasado y sumamente recomendable, se llama Justice, Equality and Constructivism, sin duda alguna hay más tiempo que vida.; 1:05 p.m.

Y sus preguntas siguen siendo las correctas, como muchas de sus respuestas.

nachin dijo...: Me gustaría transmitir algunos extractos donde Cohen se refiere a sí mismo. Me impresionó que un autor de capacidad tal como para escribir "Self ownership, freedom, and equality" se introdujese -en el mismo libro- admitiendo lo siguiente:

"When I was a young lecturer (...) in 1963 (...) I had, in particular, strong convictions about justice and about the injustice of inequality and of capitalist exploitation, but I did not think tahat i had, or would come to have, annything sufficiently distinctive to say about justice, or about capitalist injustice, to be worth printing."

"I had never heard anargument against socialism for which I did not (so I thought) already have an answer in my pocket. Then one day in 1972, in my room at University College, Jerry Dworkin nudged me. He began a process that, in time, roused me from form what had been my dogmatic socialist slumber. He did that by hitting me with an outline of the antisocialist Wilt Chamberlain argument (...) My reaction to the argument was a mixture of irritation and anxiety. There was a would-be confidence that it depended on sleight of hand, alongside a lurking or looming fear that maybe it did not"

"Then Nozick´s argument appeared in full force (...), in 1974, in Anarchy itself, and now I was vigorously engaged by it (...) I seek to explain why Marxists like me were vulnerable to Nozick´s libertarianism in a way that liberals like Nagel and Scanlon were not. Many friends and colleagues were surprised by how seriously I and some other Marxists took libertarianism."

"It took me several years to come to see, what I now regard as elementary, that the stated principle -of self-ownership- is the centre of libertarianism, and several years more to see that that is why libertarianism disturbs some Marxists, since (...) an appeal to self-ownership is latent in the standard Marxist condemnation of exploitation, and it is therefore difficult for marxists to reject libertarianism without putting a key position of their own into question."

Creo que lo expuesto habla de una persona de gran humildad, y de auténtico compromiso con la verdad. Compromiso tal, que fue capaz de tomar en serio ideas contrarias a las suyas y abordarlas hasta arribar a una teoría más verdadera y justa que le trajese la calma.; 5:16 p.m.
Pablo dijo...: Todavía tengo fresco el recuerdo de su gran performance en la Valedictory Lecture del año pasado. La capacidad de Cohen para imitar filósofos del pasado era verdaderamente extraordinaria. Aquí unas fotos de Chris Bertram del evento; en esta se lo ve personificando a Isaiah Berlin.

Me acuerdo también de la clase que nos dio a los estudiantes de BPhil, en donde expuso parte del material que luego terminó formando parte de Rescuing Justice and Equality. De este libro Cohen solía decir, con su característico sentido del humor, que trataba de la igualdad y la justicia, en ese orden, pero que en el título las palabras se invirtieron "porque suena mejor así".; 11:39 p.m.

Pablo: se consigue la transcripcion de la Valedictory Lecture? Fue publicada en algun lado?
Creo que no casualmente esta titulada igual que un libro de Bertrand Russell... ("My Philosophical Development (and Impressions of Some Philosophers That I Met on My Way)".

CV dijo...: Sip, es una version algo ampliada y pulida de aquel articulo que tradujeras para la compilacion "Razones para el socialismo".

Aparecera en el mismo formato que el pequeño libro de Harry Frankfurt On Bullshit.
